“Few things are as healing as a walk. I heartily endorse Healing Walks for Hard Times.”
–Christiane Northrup, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom.
“Courageous, compassionate and compelling, this wise guide to the healing power of walking elegantly demonstrates how simple steps can offer profound benefits.” —Carol Krucoff, author of Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain and Duke Integrative Medicine yoga therapist
Tap the healing power of movement with Healing Walks for Hard Times.
With a focus on walking for wellness rather than walking for fitness, it maps a path through life’s difficulties with walks that restore momentum in lives jolted by illness or trauma.
More than an exercise guide, Healing Walks for Hard Times acknowledges recovery not only as a physical process, but also an emotional, spiritual, and mental journey—a journey of survivorship.

THE WALKING PRESCRIPTION
|
For the nation’s 92 million walkers, Healing Walks for Hard Times affirms that walking is good medicine. With a guided program of movement, it places walking on a par with meditative practices such as tai chi, yoga, and relaxation programs offered as mind-body resources at treatment centers. Walking becomes a healing practice available to almost anyone and as accessible as the nearest sidewalk.
Personal stories from survivors of heart disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, accident, and natural disaster complement the author’s experiences to inspire and affirm the effectiveness of walking as a healing path in any trauma.
Week by week, walkers learn to pair their steps with focusing techniques that clear a path through crisis. By directing awareness to breath, visual imagery, or self-talk, they create stress release and moments of peace in which healing and recovery begin.
With walk guidelines at three fitness levels, walkers set the pace of their own healing, making Healing Walks for Hard Times a healing tool for anyone tripped by adversity.
