Healing Walks for Hard Times
Quiet Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body & Get Your Life Back
An 8-Week Program
Carolyn Scott Kortge
Carolyn Scott Kortge, author of The Spirited Walker: Fitness Walking for Clarity, Balance, and Spiritual Connection, is an award-winning journalist, cancer survivor and seasoned public speaker.
She has been featured as an authority on walking in publications including SELF Magazine, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, CURE, HEALTH, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsweek and Bottom Line. The Spirited Walker (HarperOne 1998) chronicles Kortge’s mid-life transformation from “klutz” to “athlete” as a competitive race walker. Two years after release of that book, Kortge was diagnosed with breast cancer. Out of her encounter with a life-threatening disease, she created the Walking Well® program and stepped before a new audience—a growing body of people who identify themselves as survivors. She has been a repeat presenter at health and wellness events including CURE National Forums for cancer patients and survivors and Life Beyond Cancer retreats sponsored by US Oncology.
In Healing Walks for Hard Times, Kortge draws on personal experience, interviews, and the metaphors of movement to provide a compassionate path of healing that guides readers to get their feet on the ground, taking steps that move them forward on a path of healing and recovery.
Take your fitness walks to a deeper level with The Spirited Walker, a guide to exploring the inner dimensions of America’s favorite exercise. Author Carolyn Scott Kortge is a former Masters racewalker who holds bronze and silver medals from the USA Track and Field Association’s National Masters Championships.
In The Spirited Walker she blends athletic performance and meditative focus in an approach to fitness that puts care of the body on equal footing with care of the soul, for walkers of any age or fitness level.

One Step at a Time
“Sure, consistent walking can strengthen bones and muscles and keep expanding waistlines in check. But in Healing Walks for Hard Times, award winning journalist, former competitive racewalker and breast cancer survivor Carolyn Scott Kortge offers an eight-week program that focuses more on walking for wellness than walking for fitness.” Read the article
On the Walking Path to Survival
“Award-winning journalist Carolyn Scott Kortge was 58-years-old when, sitting alone in the sauna after a workout at her athletic club in Eugene, Ore., she decided to perform a routine breast exam. Kortge discovered a small, hard lump in her left breast and, that day, scheduled an appointment with her doctor. He was concerned enough to order an immediate lumpectomy.” Writer Anna Sachse interviews Carolyn about her personal cancer experience and the importance of walking in her recovery and survivorship.
